Romance Languages

Unlike other languages, Romance Languages forms an interesting branch of stydy for lingustics. The Romance languages are sometimes referred to as Romanic languages, Latin languages or Neolatin languages and they are actually a branch of the Indo-European language family. Its commonly believed that there are nearly 600 million native speakers of Romance language in different parts of America Europe, and Asia, though with the passage of time many local dialects have been incorporated in these Romance languages so as to make them more familiar with the local people. This actually led to the popularity and greater reach of such languages. Facts indicate that Romance languages have their roots in Latin, which was actually used by soldiers, and merchants of the Europe, this farther enchanced their reach to other countries. One of the major aspects of Romance Languages is the fact that they gave birth to varied other languages.

History of Romance Languages

Though the roots of these languages are yet to be traced to proper origins. During the political decline of the Roman Empire in 5th century, there was
migrations in different parts of Europe and the Latin-speaking communities was actually fragmented into independent states. As the geographic states that Central Europe and the Balkans region was occupied by the Germanic, Slavic tribes, and the Huns, while the Vlachs occupied the rest of Europe. Its commonly believed that British Romance and African Romance owe their origin to the varied forms of Vulgar Latin used in southeastern Britain and the Roman Empire dominated regions of Africa, though towards the Middle Ages these languageslost its appealas English came to be widely used as the form of communication not only in oral but also in verbal form of ineraction between different people.

Historically, its believed that Germanic tribes that settled down in Italy, Gaul, and parts of erstwhile Hispania adopted Latin as their language and though Latin language was widely used in the ancient city of Rome. In the 10th and 13th centuries, a local language was developed on lines of Latin but in some countries such as Portugal, this language transition was imposed forcibly by law; whereas in Italy, prominent poets and writers used the language as means to express their poetic thoughts and in the process they developed some of the most beautiful poetic verses and dramatic monologues. Also with the invention of the press the evolution of Romance languages suffered a setback especially from 16th century as world over English came to be used as a standard language.

Modern Romance Languages

The Romance Languages are now confined to Spanish, Portugese, French, Italian and Roman linguistic communication process.
